If you go with the install (I did) the installer places a shortcut to the Genie management software on your desktop. The router redirects you to the Netgear Genie management setup page.Īfter the initial setup, a message pops up asking if you want to install the optional Desktop Genie for monitoring and repairing network issues.

Connect the cable as shown in the enclosed illustrated instructions, extend the retractable antennas, and fire up a browser. Netgear has gotten automated setup down to a science with its last couple of dual-band routers, and the no-brainer setup with the X6 is no exception. Overheating should not be an issue with this router, though, as with any router, you will want to place it somewhere with decent airflow. I left filmmaker Ken Burns' 10-hour Civil War documentary running on Netflix through the router overnight, and the X6 was barely warm the next morning. Of course, such a big and powerful device needs sufficient cooling, and Netgear delivers more than enough, in the form of vents on the entire topside of the router and along the back panel. The X6's dimensions are 2.14 by 11.63 by 8.92 inches (HWD), and it weighs almost 2.5 pounds. The previous Nighthawk ($149.89 at Amazon) (Opens in a new window) measures 1.97 by 11.22 by 7.26 inches (HWD) and weighs about 1.6 pounds. It's even bigger and heavier than the original Nighthawk-which is a sizable piece of hardware. The X6 is as large as it is weird-looking. Thirteen LEDs run down the top-center panel, providing statuses of the router's various connections, such as WAN and USB. The back panel also has a WAN port and four LAN ports, an LED off/on switch, and a power switch. (Opens in a new window) Read Our Trendnet AC1900 Dual Band Wireless Router (TEW-818DRU) Reviewīack to the exterior: On the X6's back panel are a USB 2.0 and a 3.0 port, both of which can support printers and external drives. Other noteworthy components of the X6 include a dual-core 1GHz processor with three offload processors, 128MB of flash memory, and 256MB of RAM. That's not necessarily a problem, however, as the goal of this router is to handle many devices on a network at once it's not really about blazing-fast throughput for a single device. In fact, the X6 is not even among the five fastest routers I've tested. It's advertised as offering up to 3.2Gbps speeds, but that's not real-world speed. The AC3200 refers to its total theoretical bandwidth: It supports up to 600Mbps on the 2.4GHz signal and up to 1300Mbps on each 5GHz band. Inside the Nighthawk X6 are some powerful components. These antennas swivel, allowing you to position them for the best signal, but they can be tricky to maneuver and, while reasonably sturdy, seem like they may be easy to break with rough handling. When fully extended, they make the router look like a six-legged bug flipped on its back. The router has a rectangular chassis that slopes upwards and six retractable external antennas that can fold in and out from the housing. What's more likely to immediately strike you about the Nighthawk X6, however, is its bizarre design. The X6 automatically configures its two 5GHz bands on different channels, so you can connect more devices at 5GHz without the performance suffering.

You'd normally want to assign those devices to the more-robust 5GHz band, but with so many gadgets competing for throughput, you'd soon saturate it. More and more home networks have tablets, smartphones, and gaming consoles performing heavy-demand throughput tasks, such as streaming HD video. These dual 5GHz bands act as performance load balancers. The Nighthawk X6 offers a 2.4GHz band and two 5GHz bands. We've only had dual-band routers until now, operating on the 2.4GHz and 5GHz band.

The Netgear Nighthawk X6 AC3200 Tri-Band WiFi Router (R8000) ($299) makes an impressive debut, deftly managing multiple wireless devices on a single network, though a few minor rough spots that turned up in my testing show that a firmware update may be in order in the near future. This new class of device is designed for the Internet of Things (IoT)-that is, it's meant to handle the increasing number and variety of devices many of us have on our networks. The next generation of wireless routers is here: Netgear is the first manufacturer to offer a tri-band router.
